Janet Rady Fine Art is excited to present Iranian artistRokni Haerizadeh’s painting ‘Khosrow and Shirin’ (2009) as the focus of November’s Artist Focus newsletter. Rokni’s painting eloquently embodies an attachment with Iranian mythology and tradition coupled with a sarcastic view of the ambiguities of life in Iran today.
In Rokni’s ‘Khosrow and Shirin’ we see the lovers from the Shahnameh epic comically distorted and set against an incongruous backdrop of contemporary Gauguinesque pictures echoing elements of the protagonists’ characteristics, perhaps acting as a commentary on the absurdity of love and life in each of our worlds.
Born in 1978, Tehran, Rokni Haerizadeh has had several solo shows in Dubai with Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde, most recently ‘Oh Victory, You Forgot Your Underwear’ in 2009, and has participated in group shows such as Charles Saatchi’s ‘Unveiled: New Art from the Middle East’, 2009, and ‘Raad—o—Bargh’ at Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery in Paris, 2009. In June 2012, his work was featured in Art Basel’s Statements section. His works are to be found in the collections of, amongst others, theTehran Museum of Contemporary Art, Iran; Charles Saatchi Collection, London, UK; JP Morgan Collection, NY, USA and the Devi Art Foundation, India. Rokni currently lives and works in Dubai.
