Art is not about studying, it is in your genes… you either have it or not!Safwan Dahoul
On May 8th, Ayyam Gallery in collaboration with Edge of Arabia hosted “Repetitive Dream” talk by Syrian artist Safwan Dahoul and Co-founder of Ayyam Gallery Khaled Samawi moderated by Edge of Arabia Director Stephen Stapleton, included also book-signing by Safwan, the event came prior to his first solo exhibition in London at of course Ayyam Gallery.
The talk was an opportunity for London art scene to meet Safwan up close & personal and see some of his previous works including paintings from last solo exhibition ‘A Real Dream’ in 2011, exclusive prints and first video installation that was shown in Art Dubai last March. Safwan openly talked about his Dream journey, shared memories & yearning to his hometown Damascus, his inspiration & life as an artist and professor at Damascus Fine Art University. He also talked about his work with Ayyam and its’ family. There was an open dialog between the artist & audience then Safwan begun signing his book and catalogue.
Hats off for Ayyam Gallery & Edge of Arabia as the talk was a great chance – as I said – not only to know Safwan personally, but also compare between his previous and new work which was exposed the next day at Ayyam Gallery, especially that many people perhaps heard of the artist and saw his work online but didn’t see it live. Edge of Arabia’s new space in Battersea is supported by their Founding Partner Abdul Latif Jameel Community Initiatives as part of their mission to inspire a positive and timely discussion about contemporary Arab culture. www.edgeofarabia.com
By the way, both exhibitions are still running; Edge of Arabia is until June 2nd & at Ayyam Gallery – London until June 18, 2013. My personal review on Safwan’s latest work will be out soon, until then I’ll leave you with one sneak preview of Repetitive Dream :: The Show, that is the first after Safwan Dahoul moved to Dubai due to the 2011 Syrian revolution.
